How BS to AD conversion works
Bikram Sambat (BS), also written Vikram Samvat, is the official calendar of Nepal. A BS year runs about 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian (AD) year and starts on Baisakh 1, in mid-April. Month lengths change from year to year, between 29 and 32 days, so BS dates cannot be converted with a formula. This tool uses the calendar tables published by Nepal’s Panchang Samiti and projects the years not yet published.
Convert dates in your app with the Calendar APICommon questions
How do I convert a BS date to AD?
Choose BS, enter the date as YYYY-MM-DD and select ‘Convert’. You get the AD date and the weekday. Choose AD to convert the other way.
Which years are supported?
BS 1970 to 2100. Years the Panchang Samiti has published are marked ‘Published by the Samiti’. Later years are projected, and their dates can move when the Samiti publishes them.
What is the difference between BS and AD?
From mid-April to 31 December, the BS year is the AD year plus 57. From 1 January to mid-April, it is the AD year plus 56. Month and day boundaries do not line up, so use the converter for an exact date.
What is Nepal Sambat?
Nepal Sambat is the lunar calendar traditionally used by the Newar community and recognised as a national calendar of Nepal. The converter shows the Nepal Sambat year alongside BS and AD.
