Conventions

Changes only how lunar months are named. Tithi and nakshatra stay the same.

Printed panchangs take sunrise as the moment the top of the Sun appears. The centre rises about 4 minutes later, which matters only when a tithi or nakshatra ends in those minutes.

What you enter goes to the API only to compute this result. It is never stored or logged.

What is a panchang?

A panchang is the Hindu almanac for a day. Its five limbs are tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga and karana. They depend on sunrise and on the positions of the Sun and Moon, so the panchang changes with the place as well as the date. This tool gives the five limbs with their end times, sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset and the day and night choghadiya for any place, with Panchang Samiti rulings applied for Nepal.

Common questions

What is a tithi?

A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun. A lunar month has 30 tithis: 15 in the waxing half (shukla paksha) and 15 in the waning half (krishna paksha). The tithi running at sunrise is the tithi of the day.

What is choghadiya?

Choghadiya divides the time from sunrise to sunset into eight parts, and from sunset to the next sunrise into eight more. Each part is auspicious, neutral or inauspicious, and is used to pick a time for travel, a purchase or starting new work.

Why does the panchang differ between Nepal and India?

Sunrise differs by place, so the tithi at sunrise can differ too. Nepal follows its Panchang Samiti’s rulings for festival dates, and India commonly uses amanta or purnimanta months. This tool applies the Samiti rulings for Nepal.

Which places are supported?

Any latitude and longitude. Search for a city, or enter coordinates. Near the poles, where the Sun may not rise or set, sunrise-based values can be missing.
